Al Mehdi Quran Center is committed to spreading authentic Islamic knowledge based on Shia (Fiqh-e-Jafariya) teachings. Understanding the rules of purity is essential for every Muslim, as many acts of worship depend on ritual cleanliness. One of the most important aspects of Taharah (purity) is Wajib Ghusl.

In this article, Al Mehdi Quran Center explains how many Wajib Ghusl exist in Shia Islam and when they become obligatory.

How Many Wajib Ghusl Are There in Shia Islam?

According to Shia Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh-e-Jafariya), there are seven (7) obligatory (Wajib) Ghusl. These Ghusl must be performed in specific situations to make acts of worship such as Salah, fasting, and Quran recitation valid.

List of Wajib Ghusl in Shia Islam

1. Ghusl al-Janabah

Ghusl al-Janabah becomes obligatory when:

  • Semen is discharged

  • Sexual intercourse takes place

Without performing this Ghusl, a person cannot perform Salah, fast, enter a mosque, or touch the Holy Quran.

2. Ghusl al-Haydh

When a woman’s menstrual cycle ends, Ghusl al-Haydh becomes obligatory.
Until this Ghusl is performed:

  • Salah is not valid

  • Fasting is not accepted

3. Ghusl al-Nifas

Nifas refers to the bleeding after childbirth.
Once this bleeding stops, a woman must perform Ghusl al-Nifas before resuming prayers and fasting.

4. Ghusl al-Istihada (In Certain Cases)

Istihada is irregular bleeding outside the menstrual cycle.
In some types of Istihada, Ghusl is obligatory, while in others only Wudu is required, depending on the situation.

5. Ghusl Mass-e-Mayyit

This Ghusl becomes obligatory if a person touches:

  • A dead human body

  • After the body has become cold

  • Before Ghusl al-Mayyit has been performed

6. Ghusl al-Mayyit

When a Muslim passes away, performing Ghusl al-Mayyit is obligatory before burial.
It is performed in three steps:

  1. Water mixed with lotus leaves (Sidrah)

  2. Water mixed with camphor (Kafur)

  3. Pure water

7. Ghusl al-Islam

When a non-Muslim accepts Islam, Ghusl al-Islam becomes obligatory so the new Muslim may begin worship in a state of spiritual and physical purity.
